TULSA – The POTUS is expecting many visitors this week for the White House Science Fair including some local Girl Scouts from the Tulsa area.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma will be attending the president’s sixth and final Science Fair. The “Supergirls” are focusing this year’s project on recycling.

They built a “fun dual trash/ recycle bin” that could be used in schools or daycares. The bins have a motion sensor that triggers when the bins are opened to ask the person using them to “stop and think – can I recycle that?” If the person using the bin decides to recycle, then a robotic Supergirl does a little happy dance!

"America has a huge opportunity for economic growth with girls' interest in science, technology, engineering, and math," says Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. "When girls succeed, so does society. We all have a role to play in making girls feel supported and capable when it comes to involvement in STEM fields-and anything else they set their minds to and have traditionally been steered away from."

Last year Troop 411 and their coach Suzanne Dodson took a trip to DC to show off the battery-powered page turner for those with arthritis, people who are paralyzed as well as those with other arm disabilities.
