Union Athletics mourns football player killed in car accident

TULSA, Okla. — Union Athletics is mourning a student-athlete killed in a car accident.

They shared the news on Twitter.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Juan Cruz-Mata, 41, was driving westbound on the Cherokee Turnpike on Sunday night. The accident happened about a fourth of a mile north of Locust Grove in Mayes County. OHP is investigating the cause of the accident.

OHP reported Elimia Cruz, 44, and two children, including Juan Cruz, died in the crash. Two other children are being treated as well as the driver.

Union Athletics said, "Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss with his family, friends, teammates, & the entire Union Community."
