House unveils tax plan to pay for teacher raises

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma House leaders are unveiling a new plan to ask voters to give teachers a pay raise of up to $10,000 and pay for it by slightly increasing the sales tax and expanding it to include services.

The proposal that is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in a key House budget committee would put the plan before voters in November as an alternative to a separate 1-cent sales tax for education.

The new House proposal would increase the sales tax from 4.5 percent to 4.9 percent and expand it to include things like repair, installation, delivery and maintenance services, laundry and dry cleaning, automobile repair services, and computer software delivered electronically.

Under the plan, veteran teachers would receive a pay raise of $10,000.
