TULSA -- Police open fire on a Tulsa man when they say he charged them with an axe. The Tulsa Police Department says it began as a domestic dispute, but turned deadly when officers arrived.
TPD says they received a domestic violence call just before six o'clock Monday evening.
They say when officers arrived, a man with an axe started to come at them.
Officers say the man told them to shoot him. We're told both officers on scene opened fire, killing the man.
Police say the man's wife called 911, scared for her own life. We're told she was in her vehicle when officers arrived, which made the man come outside.
"The axe was laying right next to him," Tulsa Police Sgt. Shane Tuell said. "We are going to be able to recover enough evidence here. We were lucky enough that one of the officers did have video in his car. We don't know if his car is angled well enough to see anything or not, we hope so. We will look at that video when we can and that will be part of the evidence in this case."
TPD says both officers involved left the scene immediately. As procedure, the officers involved are on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
At this time, TPD says they're not sure how many times both officers discharged their weapons. We've seen a lot of talk about race in the wake of recent police shootings across the country. In this case, everyone involved is white.
