TULSA - The Tulsa Fire Department is investigating the cause of a midtown apartment fire that killed one man and left another in serious condition early Thursday.
Officials say a two-alarm fire destroyed 12 units and left 12 more without power at the Royals Arms apartments near 51st Street and Peoria Avenue.
Firefighters say they were able to rescue one man after searching the apartment but found the person who died in a secondary search.
“These fires can progress rather rapidly, especially at night when folks are asleep. That’s why having a working smoke detector in your apartment and in your residence is very important so that you get advanced notice,” said Chief Michael Baker.
TFD says three firefighters were transported to the hospital in stable condition after one suffered shock and two others were injured after a balcony collapsed. After receiving treatment at the hospital, all three firefighters were able to go home, according Stan May, TFD public information officer.
At least 50 firefighters, EMSA, and Red Cross responded to the fire.
Firefighters are not clear how many people have been displaced at this time.
