OWASSO, Okla. - An Owasso police officer is facing charges stemming from an arrest in June.

Officer Michael D. Denton faces charges for assault and battery with a deadly weapon and reckless conduct with a firearm.

Denton allegedly hit Cody Matthews numerous times with the barrel and butt stock of a shotgun while Matthews was unable to resist officers June 14, 2015.

Video from a body camera worn by another officer captured the incident.

Matthews was arrested after leading officers on a high-speed chase that ended in Nowata.

Denton's attorney, Pat Hunt, talked to 2 Works for You on June 18 and said his client did not use excessive force.

It isn't the first time Denton has been accused of using excessive force.

In 2011, after dragging a suspect in custody, Denton can be seen on video striking the handcuffed suspect multiple times.

Denton was fired, but an arbitrator said that termination was invalid and ordered the city to reinstate Denton. He later returned to the Owasso Police Department.
