An exotic pet is on the loose in Coweta and worried neighbors are forced to lock up their animals.

It could be hiding anywhere on N. Atoka Ave. In trees, attics, or crawl spaces.

“She's probably not very far.”

Kenneth Hicks is talking about his python Sophie.

The 9-foot, 40 pound snake escaped her cage then crawled right out the window. Now she's hiding somewhere in the Coweta neighborhood.

“Very seldom do we get a call such as this where a snake is loose,” Coweta Police Chief Mike Bell said.

 Police spent hours searching.

“They are not known to attack humans, that's not what we're concerned about,” Bell said. “We're concerned about the small animals in the area.”

Fortunately though Sophie was fed a rabbit last week and should not be hungry for a few more weeks.

But knowing a python can scarf down a ten pound bunny, still puts neighbors on edge.

“I don't want my cat to be eaten,” Candice Caress said.

Caress says her cat will be coming inside tonight.

But has no idea what she would do if the snake slithered toward her.

“You see that walking down the street what do you do?” Caress said. “Just back away and hope it doesn't bite you?”

Hicks is urging neighbors not to overreact if they see his snake. He just hopes to bring Sophie home safely.

“I miss my snake, it feels weird walking by her cage and she's not there,” Hicks said.

If you see the python, you're best bet is to leave it alone and call 911 so animal control can take it home.
