BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Two areas of Broken Arrow experienced a "significant increase" in home burglaries on the city's west side during the month of August.

According to the Broken Arrow Police Department, the increase was between 51st to 91st and Garnett to Aspen and 91st to 141st and Garnett to Elm.

More than 85 percent of the burglaries are happening despite locked windows and doors. Televisions and cash or checks are the items that were stolen the most, followed by electronics and tools.

Police said most of the burglaries are happening on Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and that they have asked for the city's sanitation crews to help with reporting suspicious activity.

BAPD posted this home security check list on their Facebook page:

  • Keep doors locked when you are at home alone.
  • Don’t open the door to strangers, but make sure they know you are there.
  • Close and lock windows when leaving your home.
  • Secure all swinging doors with dead-bolt locks. Use locking bars to secure sliding doors.
  • Don't hide spare keys. Give them to a trusted neighbor.
  • Check your smoke and alarm systems once a month.
  • Use automatic timers to turn indoor lights on and off to make it appear you are at home.
  • Ask a neighbor to watch over your home and pick up deliveries while you are away.
  • Identify your belongings by engraving an identifying number on your possessions.
  • If you have a home alarm September is the month you renew your license.
  • If you would like to have an Alert Neighborhood meeting for your area contact; Lisa Ford, Crime Prevention Specialist 918-451-8213 or lford@brokenarrowok.gov
