OSBI report shows increase in concealed carry licenses

OKLAHOMA CITY - Newly released data shows a jump in the number of concealed carry licenses in Oklahoma.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, 39,875 concealed carry licenses were issued in 2012 -- an increase of nearly 16,000 from 2011. More than 46,000 applications were submitted.

The report breaks down the number of applications -- and whether licenses were issued, denied, revoked or suspended -- into race, age, sex and county.

Tulsa County led the state in the number of licenses issued with 6,468. Oklahoma County followed close behind with 5,523.

The majority of licenses were issued to white males -- 25,555 -- and white females -- 10,486. The average age for a licensee was 50.

The OSBI is required by law to release the annual report of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, which issues handgun licenses to the state's residents.
