MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- It's Davion Grey's junior year at Bacone College, but this semester he's getting used to a different way of living.
The campus is cutting costs to stay open, including positions like housekeeping staff.
"This place is infested with different animals, different insects. Sometimes we come across spiders as big as my hand," Grey said.
Student affairs staff told 2 Works for You while they look at contracted housekeeping for the future, they hope students will take ownership and look after their space. Right now Bacone is focusing on the bare necessities.
"We're covering their electricity and making sure we're providing them with the right number of meals so that Sodexo is able to open their new cafeteria," interim vice president of student affairs Kaila Harjo said.
In the male dorm on campus, students complain about everything from overflowing trash bins to soap dispensers that stay empty for weeks at a time.
"One day I was walking out and the ceiling fell out of nowhere. It went all over the floor. And you know who had to clean it up? I had to," freshman Elyjah Thompson said.
Bacone is currently in the process of designating students for trash pickup in the dorms, student union, and classrooms. Until then, people like Thompson said they take over cleaning themselves.
"I have to clean up the whole entire building by myself. Everybody else is lazy, they don't want to pick up their trash or clean up the bathrooms. I have to do it myself, I have to do all of it," he said.
Ultimately the university believes giving students added responsibilities will make them more accountable.
