Autumn begins at 9:49 a.m. Saturday, but fall gardening has already begun.
With plant-frying triple-digit temperatures behind us, it's time to move forward in the garden.
I just completed a new fence to keep out the hungry deer who frequent our yard. Never mind that it took me five hours to replicate one from a four minute YouTube video.
The wife was happy with the results, and that's all that really matters.
We planted radishes a couple of weeks ago and they are doing very well. We also put in spinach and three different types of lettuce.
Another thing that happened was the cooler temperatures have brought the tomatoes back to life!
I'm sure a lot of people gave up when temperatures hit 110 and tomatoes stopped producing -- and I might have too -- but my wife suggested we keep the plants and after the heat broke they perked up. So far nothing large, but we're picking a lot of cherry tomatoes and others near golf ball size. That will help fill a salad bowl!
Next project is to build a makeshift cold frame. This will extend the growing season after we get near our first freeze. In Tulsa our average first freeze is November 3. By that time I hope to have a lot of lettuce, spinach, and radishes.
