Cilic, Monfils land in Vienna quarters

Last Update: 10/29 4:04 pm

Top-seeded Croat Marin Cilic and last year's runner-up Gael Monfils were among Thursday's second-round winners at the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy.

Cilic got past German Daniel Brands 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, while a third-seeded Monfils outlasted Czech Jan Hajek 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourts at Wiener Stadthalle. The French Monfils was upset by German Philipp Petzschner in last year's Vienna finale.

Sixth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez moved on with a 6-3, 6-3 spanking of Austria's own Daniel Koellerer, while seventh-seeded Austrian favorite Jurgen Melzer moved into the round of eight with a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Slovakian veteran Dominik Hrbaty, a qualifier this week. Lopez captured his lone ATP title here in Vienna back in 2004.

One final second-rounder saw Serbian Janko Tipsarevic dismiss German Michael Berrer 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Friday's quarterfinals will pit Cilic against Lopez, second-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek versus Melzer, Monfils against Tipsarevic and fourth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber versus fifth-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
