Terry McCann, Oklahoma Olympian: Moved to Tulsa in the 1950s and trained for the 1960 Rome Olympics

TULSA - Oklahoma Olympians is a series about athletes who were born here, lived here or went to school here.

Terry McCann wrestled for the University of Iowa, but moved to Tulsa in the late 1950s.

While working at an oil refinery here, he also trained for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

McCann was said to be a "complete" wrestler. He fulfilled his dream of bringing home the gold medal as a bantamweight.

McCann was an ambassador for wrestling the rest of his life.

He helped found the sport's governing body, now known as USA Wrestling.

McCann died of mesothelioma in 2006 at the age of 72.

The Sochi Olympic Games begin Feb. 6. Find out more in our special section on KJRH.com.
