Geno Smith loses ground to Braxton Miller, Collin Klein in Scripps Heisman Poll

Don't look now, Geno: Braxton and Collin are gaining on you.

Coming off his worst performance of the season -- and West Virginia's first defeat -- Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith saw his lead in the Scripps Heisman Poll shrink to just eight points this week.

Smith threw for 255 yards and one touchdown in West Virginia's 49-14 loss to Texas Tech last Saturday. Smith has 38 points in this week's Scripps Heisman Poll as just five of the 10 voters picked him first, down from nine last week.

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller is second with 30 points, including one first-place vote. Miller threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 149 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes' 52-49 win over Indiana.

Four other players received a first-place vote, including Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein. Klein threw for 187 yards and rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the Wildcats' 27-21 victory over Iowa State. He is third in this week's Heisman Poll with 28 points.

Also receiving a first-place vote were Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o (16 points overall), Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel (15 points), and Oregon wide receiver/running back/kick returner De'Anthony Thomas (11 points).

The Scripps poll is the longest running Heisman poll in the nation. Since its inception in 1987, it has correctly picked the Heisman winner in its final weekly poll 21 of 25 years, including Robert Griffin III last year. Ten Heisman voters each selected five players this week, and points are awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five points for a first-place vote, four points for second, etc.
