Pete Hughes takes over Oklahoma Sooners baseball program after 7 seasons at Virginia Tech

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Pete Hughes has taken over the Oklahoma baseball program, leaving Virginia Tech after leading the Hokies to 30 or more victories each of the past five seasons.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione announced the hiring Thursday. Hughes replaces Sunny Golloway, who left the Sooners this month to become the head coach at Auburn.

Hughes finished 40-22 this past season and the Hokies hosted an NCAA regional -- which Oklahoma won -- for the first time.

He spent seven seasons at Virginia Tech. Before that, he was the head coach at Boston College for eight years after starting his career as the head coach at Trinity (Texas) for two years. Overall, he is 524-385-2.

The 45-year-old Hughes says he had a heart attack this month but that doctors placed a stint in the damaged blood vessel and he's fine now.
