Study: Oklahoma sales tax 5th highest in US

TULSA - Oklahoma sales tax is among the highest in the nation, according to a study released Monday.

Only four states are more heavily taxed than Oklahoma, the Tax Foundation report found. Each state's local and state sales tax rate were compiled and added into one "combined rate" statistic.

Oklahoma's mark measures to 8.67 percent, less than a percentage point behind the nation-leading 9.44 of Tennessee, and significantly higher than much of the country.

Border states Texas and Kansas each have a lower sales tax, which, studies show, serve as effective teases for Oklahoma shoppers looking for the best deal.
