Jury finds Vian man guilty of dragging horse to death behind all-terrain vehicle

VIAN, Okla. - A Vian man was convicted of felony animal cruelty for dragging a horse to death.

A Sequoyah County jury found 27-year-old Rueben Ray Houston guilty and recommended a sentence of six months in the county jail.

Prosecutors say Houston dragged the horse for about a half-mile behind his all-terrain vehicle until the animal fell and was unable to get up.

Prosecutors say Houston then cut a neighbor's fence and dragged the horse to a tree where he left it to die.

Defense attorney Steven Ramm argued that Houston thought the horse was dead and did not intentionally injure the animal.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for Thursday.
