OKLAHOMA CITY - Authorities in Oklahoma County are searching for the person responsible for throwing a dog off a highway bridge.
The German Shepherd suffered critical injuries.
"This is just a tragic, really sick situation," said Mark Myers, Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
The dog, identified as "Rookie" by his collar, was thrown from a bridge on Southeast 59th Street onto Interstate 40 Wednesday.
"For someone to take a defenseless dog and just toss it off of a bridge over a major interstate...," said Myers. "I really don't understand how someone could do something like that."
Officials are unsure if Rookie was also hit by a car.
Myers says a truck driver saw the incident and called the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The ordeal left Rookie with a fractured leg and internal bleeding. He was taken to Deer Creek Animal Hospital in Harrah where he was adopted and sent to Stillwater to recover.
Authorities contacted the owner listed on Rookie's collar but they said they'd given the dog to someone else.
The Humane Society of the United States is covering all veterinary costs for Rookie and is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office.
