TULSA --   While spending Memorial Day with her family, Sheila Bradley said Chandler Park is the last place she thought anyone would get hit by someone accused of drinking and driving.

“We’ve never seen any bad behavior out here. This is this first time I’ve actually ever heard of anything bad happening out here,’ said Bradley.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said Sunday night, 22 year-old Austin Shanks came speeding down a hill in his truck, lost control, hitting a woman and her daughter. The mom and daughter were with family members crossing a street to take pictures near the Chandler Park sign. Investigators said Shanks had been drinking, and officers arrested him for driving under the influence.

“I didn’t expect anything like that to happen especially in such a friendly park,’ said concerned resident Ida Ilsemunguia.

Paramedics took the mother, 29 year-old Kelli Peyatt and her 9 year-old daughter, Kandice O’Bryant to the hospital, both in critical condition. Investigators said Shanks and the woman in the car with him were not injured.

“It could have happened to us,” said Ilsemunguia.

Bradley said it’s a shame knowing something so tragic happened a family who just wanted to spend time together at her favorite park.

“Maybe wake up calls. People really to think before they start drinking and getting behind a wheel,” said Bradley.
