GLADSTONE, Mo. -- Eight people were injured after a car slammed into the Starbucks in Gladstone.
It happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Starbucks located on NE 64th St. and Antioch Road, according to Gladstone police. The driver of a Toyota Highlander told police she thought her car was in reverse rather than drive.
Of the eight injured, three were treated at the scene while five were taken to the hospital. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, according to Gladstone police.
Lisa Parker was having coffee with a friend and was one of the two dozen customers inside the store at the time the 5,500 pound SUV slammed into the building, taking much of the storefront with it.
"It took the chair that I was sitting in and shoved it up this wood table," Parker said. "There was a little round table and it hit me in the leg."
Police add the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
"This happens more often than you think. It happened right down the road here earlier this year. It happens seven to eight times a year," Sgt. Kim Buck with the Gladstone Police Department said.
For Parker on this holiday weekend, she's thankful she's still alive.
"I have a better story now to tell my coworkers-- I hope," she said. "I always said that we needed a drive-thru Starbucks in the Northland and now we have one-- not the right way."
Police said their report regarding the incident should be released next week.
