Nine people dead, 35 hospitalized in collision near Orland, Calif. involving FedEx truck, bus

GLENN COUNTY, Calif. -- Nine people are dead in a Glenn County, Calif. collision involving a charter bus and a FedEx truck. 

About 35 people have been hospitalized, according to our Sacramento NBC affiliate KCRA .

California Highway Patrol dispatcher Curtis Pahlka says authorities received a report of the crash at 5:41 p.m. Thursday.

CHP says the crash occurred when the FedEx truck cross the freeway and slammed into the charter bus. A Nissan Altima was also involved in the collision.

Passengers were on board the bus traveling northbound on Interstate 5 in Orland, Calif. KCRA reports the bus was carrying high school students from the Los Angeles area, who may have been heading to Humboldt State University at the time of the wreck.

It is not clear how many people were onboard the bus or how many others have been injured in the crash.

No further details were immediately available about the identities of the dead.
