AAA projects that 475,000 Oklahomans will hit the roads over the holiday. That's up about 7% from last year.
More vehicles on the road means heavier traffic. Plus, you need to plan ahead because you may encounter construction. ODOT is warning drivers about two problem areas.
One is one I-44 near Catoosa. Construction crews are widening the interstate there, so traffic has been shifted onto a diversion road. So be ready for delays.
The other problem area is on Highway 412 just West of Sand Springs. Drivers can expect various lane closures heading East on 412 between the turnpike and the Lake Keystone Bridge.
AAA of Oklahoma says you need to plan ahead for these delays, and give yourself plenty of extra travel time. Spokesperson Mark Bickford offers this advice, "Drive defensively. Be on the lookout for people who are not driving defensively. And make sure your eyes are open."
It's also a good idea to check out the weather forcast before hitting the road. You can call for Oklahoma road conditions by calling (888) 425-2385.
Bickford warns if you you are traveling by air, get to the airport early and be ready for long lines and crowded planes.
While air travel is down 5% this Thanksgiving compared to last, there are fewer flights because of cuts by the airlines.
