There are 4 new magnet schools this year:
Fine and performing arts at Central High School
Restaurant and Health Management at Hale
Science and Technology at McLain
Broadcast and Digital Media Webster
"It's the high school of the future." said TPS Superintendent, Dr. Keith Ballard.
Students will learn in the environment they choose while at the same time shaping their career path.
The way a magnet school works is, the student choses a specific career path; core curriculum classes are still taught but with the magnet program integrated into each class.
"These kids, if they choose to go to college will be one step ahead." said Lloyd Wright, Coordinator of Broadcast and Digital Media strand at Webster High school.
Dr. Ballard said the magnet school is about forming a relationship with the student in something they are truly interested in. Whether that interest is fine and performing arts at Central high school or culinary at Nathan Hale.
"I think it is the future and i think in particularly in urban setting been great deal of success with these programs." said Ballard.
