Remarks about homosexuality made by State Representative Sally Kern are getting national attention.
Wednesday it was a topic of discussion on national television. Oklahomans spoke out on Thursday.
Rep. Kern said, "Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than... a few decades."
Oklahomans had their say Thursday at the Tulsa Equality Center. Jim Langdon, President of the Oklahoma Center for Community Injustice said, "It perpetuates the wrong image that Oklahoma is a backwards state." Nancy Mcdonald, with Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, said, "It's all over the nation. I have had calls from Connecticut and Florida saying, Nancy what is going on in your state?"
The comments are even getting national attention. The Speaker of the House has no plans to punish Rep. Kern. However, many have called on Kern to apologize for the comments.
Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation is looking into alleged death threats to the representative.
Rep. Kern says she meant no harm and that those criticizing her are only encouraging hate. She says, "I have facts to back-up everything that I said. They were not in the spirit of hate or anything like that."
