Tulsa Public Schools review safety regulations due to rising number of shootings in 2014

Tulsa Public Schools have amped safety precautions due to an increased number of school shootings nationwide this year.

Oregon's recent shooting was recorded as the 35th incident of 2014.

TPS Police Captain Douglas May said school resource officers in the area are using the event as a learning opportunity to keep students in Tulsa safe.

"When we heard about the shooting today for example, we pulled out our policies," he said. "We went over it with our policy manager to make sure they are up to date, make sure they would be applicable if that event happened here."

Summer school is currently in session and TPS are using four campuses to house seven thousand students. During the regularly scheduled school year approximately 42,000 students are enrolled in classes in Tulsa.

Campus police have been reviewing and teaching active shooter training procedures to help remain prepared.
