Tulsa mother, boyfriend arrested for severe child abuse involving 18-month-old toddler

TULSA - Police arrested a young mother and her boyfriend after the woman's 18-month-old toddler suffered a severe brain injury.

Heidi Benjamin, 19, faces one count of child abuse and one count of permitting child neglect. Her boyfriend, 24-year-old Scott Bolden, faces two counts of child abuse.

Police say they received a call about an unresponsive child at a home in north Tulsa on Tuesday evening.

Benjamin and Bolden said an accident in the living room led to the little girl's injuries, according to police.

"[Bolden] said that he was walking across the living room holding her up and tripped over some toys and when he fell the toddler landed on the couch," said Corporal Greg Smith.

Police say the story is hard to believe.

"The couch is cushioned. It's not possible to get this type of injury from a cushioned fall like that," said Smith.

Aside from the brain injury, police say they found numerous bruises on the girl's body.

They say those bruises had been on the girl's body for a period of time.

According to court records, Bolden's criminal history includes a drug conviction. Records show two protective orders were also filed against him by two different women.

Bolden was arrested and charged for domestic violence earlier this year, according to records.

A search of Benjamin's background did not return any criminal records.

Bolden and Benjamin are being held in the Tulsa County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Police say the little girl remains in ICU at St. Francis hospital.
