TULSA -- The first day of school is around the corner for many students in Tulsa County, and the sheriff's office is aiming to keep students safe.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Sheriff Vic Regalado said deputies will have zero tolerance for distracted driving and speeding in active school zones. They will increase patrols in school areas and cite drivers who don't obey the law.
"Every year without fail, we have a tragic incident in our school zones, and during the school year that results in either a critical injury or a death of a child," said Sheriff Regalado.
He announced the joint effort with AAA Oklahoma and Tulsa Crime Stoppers to get their message out about the dangers of distracted driving.
A spokesperson for AAA said that using a mobile device while driving is playing a major role in traffic crashes and fatalities.
Officials remind drivers that the speed limit in school zones is 25 miles per hour. If you get caught speeding, you can be fined up to $500. You'll also have to appear in court.
