SKIATOOK, Okla. - A local community is one of only 50 Oklahoma towns and the only one in Green Country labeled "firewise."
The town of Skiatook is taking precautions to prevent wildfires from claiming homes and lives.
Education, prevention and action are all part of the "firewise" program, and with help from the community and neighborhood associations the Skiatook Fire Department has been able to teach property owners how to keep their homes safe.
Among the prevention techniques, clear the area surrounding the home. Keep grass trimmed and remove flammable objects.
Fire Marshal Bob Nails says homes should have a buffer zone of about 70 feet.
In the event of a grass fire, the cleared area limits how far the fire can burn.
