SAPULPA, Okla. - A Sapulpa neighborhood association held a dedication Saturday for fallen Oklahoma Army National Guard Soldier Staff Sgt. Kirk Owen.
Owen was a resident of Freedom Park in Sapulpa and a member of 1st Battalion, 279 th infantry, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat team. He was killed in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device August 2011.
The dedication was an emotional moment for friends and neighbors like Ira Hargis.
"He's truly a hero because he volunteered to go into service and he gave his life in honor and support of his country," Hargis said.
The neighborhood association plans to make improvements to the park in Staff Sgt. Owens' honor.
