Sand Springs police seek attempted rape suspect after woman escapes attack on running trail

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. -- Sand Springs police are looking for a man who held a woman at gunpoint and attempted to rape her at a running trail Sunday evening.

Police say a 20-year-old Sand Springs woman was running on the River City Park trail around 5 p.m. when a man passed her on a black bicycle, then again near State  Highway 97.

The woman told police the suspect pulled out a handgun and demanded she walk into a wooded area near the trail, Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter said.

The suspect made demands to the victim to perform sexual acts and also produced a knife, Carter said.

The victim was able to escape to a nearby hospital before any rape could occur, police said.

The woman told police the suspect may have been stabbed in one of his legs during the fight.

Police describe the suspect as white, 6 feet tall with a slender build and has blonde or gray hair. The suspect was wearing cargo shorts, a baseball cap and a blue shirt. He was last seen riding a black bicycle with a case on the handle bars.
