TULSA -- Residents in a midtown Tulsa neighborhood are keeping a tight leash on their dogs after recent reports of pets gone missing in the area.

The residents are turning to social media to share their experiences to let people know what's happening. There are multiple theories as to why the dogs are being separated from their owners.

A woman recently reported a home invasion in which she said only her dog was stolen.

“It's very disturbing because, I mean, we have electronics and none of that was taken. It was just her,” said resident Megan Aviles.

Aviles said she tracked her dog to a home nearby, but couldn't prove they had her dog. She filed a police report.

Police said they get theft reports all the time, but unless there's a solid lead, they are forced to suspend the case.

“It's unnerving that someone would break in and steal a family pet or a service animal just because of the breed,” Aviles said.

People who live nearby said they do see a lot of homeless people in the area, and they say those people could be to blame.

“You can see them they come in and out of everybody's yards and things. If they're the ones taking the dogs I'm pretty sure they're not doing it for reward they're doing it more to have protection on the street while they're out and sleeping,” resident Donna Reatz said.

As for Aviles, her family is still missing its best friend, and is just hoping a break in the case reunites them.
