OWASSO, Okla. - Emergency management personnel near Owasso are investigating a fatal plane crash in a wooded area on the west side of the city.
Captain George Brown with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol tells 2NEWS that one person died in the crash.
Troopers say a small aircraft crashed in a wooded area close to 4 p.m. Sunday evening near 98th Street North and Memorial Drive.
FAA officials say the plane had departed Salina, Kansas and was en route to Tulsa.
Justin Allison, who was flying to Tulsa from Springfield, Mo. with his family, says he was in the same flight plan as the plane that crashed near Owasso. Allison says he flew over the wreckage.
"My plane actually -- we flew over what I know now to be the wreckage. They had sent us off to the northwest. We were turning right to land back on 18 south at the airport. We could see the wreckage. We were all wondering, is that a wildfire or are people out burning leaves?"
A Tulsa Airport Authority spokesperson says the plane reported mechanical problems shortly before the crash.
The NTSB will lead the investigation.
