OWASSO, Okla. - Owasso police say a woman was hospitalized after being kidnapped Monday from a store near North 113th East Avenue and Highway 169.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, police responded to Petsmart in reference to a kidnapping. After questioning witnesses, police learned a store employee was forcibly removed from the business.
Witnesses described the suspect as a white male, around 6 feet 2 inches tall with a thin build, brown hair and wearing a short sleeve blue shirt. He was later identified as 28-year-old Michael Dale Nelson.
Police say Nelson entered the store and approached the victim. He then exited the store with the victim, forcing her into a silver vehicle before driving away.
Witnesses told police the victim and Nelson knew each other.
Police notified surrounding law enforcement agencies of the situation, providing descriptions of the victim, Nelson and his vehicle.
About an hour after the kidnapping, the Owasso Police Department were notified Nelson's vehicle had crashed on Highway 11, four miles north of Highway 20 near Avant.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment as a result of the crash.
Police say Nelson fled into the Washington County area.
After a multi-agency search of the area, Nelson still remains at large. Out-of-custody charges are being sought by police.
2News spoke to Nelson's mother. She admits he has a troubled past but call him a "good person."
She describes the situation as a big misunderstanding between Nelson and his girlfriend.
The kidnapping remains under investigation.
