Owasso firefighters find large marijuana grow operation while battling house fire

OWASSO, Okla. - While responding to a house fire Tuesday night Owasso firefighters stumbled on a marijuana grow operation.

Firefighters were called to a home near East 101st Street North and North 142nd East Avenue around 10 p.m., and while extinguishing the fire, crews found a hidden room in the attic with what police call "a large marijuana cultivation system" and a number of marijuana plants.

Police were called to the scene and the homeowner admitted to the grow operation, giving consent to search the home, said Deputy Chief of Police Jason Woodruff.

Officers recovered a hydroponic grow system, grow lights, more than 40 marijuana plants, bags containing packaged/dried marijuana, scales, a loaded handgun and more than $8,000 in cash.

Woodruff said the official case of the fire has not been determined, but the preliminary investigation points to a possible electrical short in the grow lights.

Owasso police are seeking an arrest warrant for the homeowner for a number of drug charges.
