OWASSO, Okla. - Emergency crews are on the scene of an explosion inside a home in Owasso.
Police say a man and a woman were transported to the hospital with injuries after the explosion in a house near 116th North and 129th East Avenue late Saturday morning.
Officials have evacuated several nearby homes.
Investigators say they believe the pair were packing 13-inch steel shell casings with gunpowder in the preparation of commercial grade fireworks.
There is evidence consistent with the manufacture of cylindrical metal explosive devices within the home, officials say. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives team has been contacted and will be assisting in the investigation. The Tulsa Police Bomb Squad is on scene to handle the secondary devices.
Lieutenant Nick Boatman with Owasso police says pipe bombs were also found within the home. The Tulsa bomb squad is working to remove those.
Officials say the man suffered severe trauma to both hands, and the woman has lacerations to both hands.
Police say two officers were transported to an area hospital because of the overwhelming chemical smell. Both officers are doing well and are expected to be released from the hospital.
The investigation is being turned over to the ATF.
