Court of Civil Appeals orders the City of Owasso to reinstate officer fired for excessive force

OWASSO, Okla. - The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals ordered the City of Owasso to reinstate Lieutenant Mike Denton.

The city fired Denton in June 2011 for using excessive force during the arrest of Bryan Spradlin

The video captured by a camera on another Owasso police officer's uniform showed Denton elbowing Spradlin in the face multiple times.

In 2012, an arbitrator ruled Denton should get his job back, but Owasso leaders asked a district judge to ignore that order.

A judge ruled in the city's favor in in January 2013, but Denton appealed.

The Oklahoma Civil court of Appeals reversed the lower court's decision on Tuesday.

In an opinion written by Judge Larry Joplin wrote, " We hold the cited criminal statues establish no policy impediment to enforcement of the arbitrator's decision setting aside Denton's termination and reinstating him to the employment. The trial court erred in vacating the arbitrator's decision as contrary to public policy."

The City of Owasso responded to Tuesday's decision saying it was disappointed and evaluating its options.

No word on when the officer might be back on the force.
