TULSA - A teenage robbery suspect was shot and another suspect was taken into custody after an overnight standoff at a north Tulsa apartment complex.
Police say two male suspects entered the U-Stop convenience store near 36th Street North and Lewis Avenue around 8 p.m. Sunday armed with handguns. They demanded cash and cigarettes before fleeing the scene.
An employee said $35 was stolen in addition to four packs cigarettes.
A witness followed the men to an apartment in the Mohawk Manor apartment complex and called police, investigators say.
Officers surrounded the apartment and told the occupants to come outside.
Two men left the apartment but police say they were not the suspects who robbed the store. The men told officers there were still two other men inside the apartment that fit the description of the robbery suspects.
Police say one of the suspects, a 17-year-old, came out of the apartment several times armed with a handgun before returning inside.
Investigators say the suspect then came out and started walking toward officers, refused commands to drop the gun and raised it in their direction.
Two officers shot at the suspect, hitting him once in the upper chest, a police spokesman said. He was taken to a local hospital to undergo surgery.
Police say the second suspect refused to come out of the apartment and would not answer the phone.
He was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. when officers with the Special Operations Team shot a chemical agent into the apartment, forcing him out of the apartment.
"It was horrible. A lot of residents feared for their children, the safety of their children, their family. People were trying to get into the apartments to check on their family. They could not get in," Bohannon said.
Police have identified that suspect as 20-year-old Juan Carlos Alvarez. He was booked into the Tulsa County Jail for armed robbery.
Police have also released the name of the 17-year-old who was shot but 2NEWS has chosen not to identify him as he is a juvenile and he has not been officially charged.
