Oklahoma fires scorch hundreds of acres, cause evacuations

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A couple of mobile homes have burned in grass fires that forced the evacuation of several homes near Stillwater in north-central Oklahoma.

A Stillwater Fire Department dispatcher said he had received no reports of injuries, but had a report of at least two mobile homes damaged in the fires Monday afternoon.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain said at least six homes were evacuated. The American Red Cross opened an evacuation center at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater.

Another fire that erupted Monday near Calumet was contained. County Commissioner Jack Stewart says about 200 acres burned in the blaze, and an old barn may have been damaged.

Cain says a Kiowa County fire that began last week remained active. It has charred more than 28,000 acres.
