TULSA COUNTY – No criminal charges will be filed against a former Tulsa County Sheriff’s deputy that allegedly shot a prisoner during an altercation at a Dallas airport.

TCSO reports that the Dallas County District attorney announced Tuesday that a grand jury did not indict former Deputy John Werts on any charges in relation to the shooting.

The prisoner, Brent James Taff, was being transported from Utah to Tulsa when they stopped at a men’s restroom and Taff reportedly assaulted Werts. Then Werts reportedly shot Taff in the hand but Taff continued to flee until he was tackled by another deputy.

TCSO says Taff recovered from his injuries and was charged with assault on a public servant and escape causing great bodily injury.

Werts reportedly resigned from TCSO in April of this year.
