MUSKOGEE, Okla. - As the state investigation continues into an officer-involved shooting Thursday, the Muskogee Police Department has released the identities of the two officers involved.
Officers Joe Poffel and Wesley Biles are both on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
According to Cpl. Michael Mahan, Muskogee Police Department spokesman, Poffel initiated a traffic stop and Biles arrived a short time later to assist.
Police on the scene Thursday said Poffel stopped the vehicle around 12:15 p.m. because it matched the description of one reported stolen earlier in the day.
Two suspects -- Marvin Green, who was driving, and a female passenger -- were taken into custody without incident.
Police on scene said a third suspect, Thomas Estes, grabbed for Biles' gun and Poffel fired, shooting Estes in the midsection.
Estes was airlifted to a Tulsa hospital. His condition is not presently known.
Green was booked into the Muskogee County Jail for receiving stolen property. The female passenger was questioned and released.
Poffel and Biles have been with the Muskogee Police Department for six and seven years, respectively.
