Among some of the services not impacted are mental health care, nursing homes and vet centers.
The Veterans Crisis Line remains operational.
Claims processing and payments in the compensation, pension, education and vocational rehabilitation programs will continue until funding runs out.
The VA released the following statement Tuesday:
"The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has funds available to ensure claims processing and payments in the compensation, pension, education, and vocational rehabilitation programs will continue through late October. However, in the event of a prolonged shutdown, claims processing and payments in these programs will be suspended when funds are exhausted.
"For VA regional offices, normal operations will continue through Thursday, October 3rd, and should a funding resolution still not be passed by that time, our office would begin its orderly shutdown of non-essential operations on Friday, October 4th.
