Man may have set Sperry grass fire

SPERRY, Okla. - A grass fire which burned thousands of acres in Sperry may have been set by an "incendiary-like device."

Authorities say a man may have fired the device, sparking the flames just southwest of Sperry.

The fire was further spread by extremely high winds, which blew through Oklahoma's northeastern corner late Friday afternoon.

The fire, doused by later rain around 6:30, forced several evacuations. Fortunately, no injuries or structures were reported.

"The rain helped us," said Sperry fire chief Sam Bradley. "We had it under control. It was in the trees. The rain came and it helped us."

The sheriff's office is investigating.
