Large grass fire near Barnsdall under control; 200 hundred acres burned, no structures damaged

Barnsdall, Okla. - A large grass fire near Birch Lake, south of Barnsdall, is under control.

Firefighters from several Osage County fire departments were called to the the fire, around noon Wednesday.

Crews tell 2NEWS that the fire started in a valley, near the lake, and was quickly fueled by strong gusts of wind.

"It was a tornado of flames in the valley," said nearby resident Royce Dennington. "The wind was blowing and it just spiraled all the way up to 50 feet in the sky."

One unoccupied trailer home was destroyed in the fire.

Firefighters say the flames engulfed nearly 200 acres of land.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
