The Discovery channel's Shark Week is officially underway and the Oklahoma Aquarium is celebrating the annual summer series with the display of the largest collection of bull sharks in the country.

Along with special tours and events, the Oklahoma Aquarium is allowing visitors to get a behind-the-scenes look at the sharks during feeding time inside of the shark exhibit.

Aquarium Director, Teri Bowers, says Shark Week offers visitors insight into the world of sharks and what makes them a critical component of sea life.

“We have activities all week long that really focus on how important sharks are. Everywhere you find a shark they have a job to do and so we really teach people about why sharks are so important, “ Bowers said.

Since 2003, the Oklahoma Aquarium made efforts to create a robust shark exhibit that displays information about bull sharks as well as shark facts not commonly known.

Tours and events can last up to four hours educating people, mostly students, about the vast subject of sea life in order to help develop appreciation from a community locked by land.

Bowers says the ultimate goal of the aquarium is to interact with visitors by teaching them the importance of maintaining and improving the environment while showing people unique animals in the process.

“Education is our mission each and everyday not just during shark week,” Bowers said.
