Diane Delude knows just how it feels to be turned away.
"I didn't know how to access anything," Delude said. "I was in rough shape."
She says she makes too much for any government assistance-- but too little to take care of all her needs.
Every month she lives paycheck to paycheck.
"It was awful. I lived on beans."
As a diabetic, she seeks help each and every day looking for healthier food options.
"I almost starved to death last July."
That's until she found the Jenks Community Food Bank that gave her a new start on life.
"When I came here, I realized that I felt a little voice inside me saying this is going to be your lifeline and that voice was right," Delude said.
Delude is not alone.
The Jenks Community Food Bank serves 25 to 30 families every week and hands out more than 62,000 pounds of food each year.
The need is much greater than people realize," JCFB coordinator Martha Rongey said.
A need that has outgrown the food bank.
All that food comes out of a tiny 700-square foot house, where JCFB has been for the past nine years.
After years of operating in a small building ---the food bank is finally breaking ground on a new facility.
This morning, Rongey was joined by members of the community to take steps toward JCFB's future. Fundraising efforts for the new facility began in late 2011.
The new building will be four times the size of the current space, and it will include a storage area, a waiting room for customers, and a room used for food preparation.
"I'm just thrilled that we're going to be able to have a facility for the community," Rongey said.
"We're that step that helps that keeps them from starving."
A place that kept Delude going strong, when no one else was there.
"It's been a lifeline for me. I don't know what I'll do without it."
