Inmates escape Delaware County jail

JAY, Okla. - One Delaware County inmate is dead and another is in law enforcement custody after the pair escaped jail Wednesday night, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said.

Jessica Brown with the OSBI tells 2NEWS the two escaped the Delaware County Jail by severely beating two guards and stealing a deputy's vehicle. The escapees were then stopped by deputies along Highway 59 between the cities of Jay and Kansas.

According to Brown, one of the escapees appears to have committed suicide, but a final determination on the manner and cause of death will be left to the medical examiner. The other inmate was captured.

One of the escapees is said to have been in jail for homicide.
