Guts Church, family reach settlement after George Clinkscale died following 2011 boxing match

TULSA - A settlement has been reached between a Tulsa church and the family of a man who died following an unsanctioned boxing event in 2011.

George Clinkscale III, a former University of Tulsa linebacker, died Sept. 22, 2011 after participating in "Fight Night VI," sponsored by Guts Church.  He was billed as part of the main event.

Witnesses described Clinkscale as becoming ill during the fight.  The medical examiner later ruled his cause of death as sudden exertional death due to complications of sickle cell trait.

Soon after, Clinkscale's parents and fiancee filed a civil suit against the church for negligence. Pastor William Scheer and Sandra Scheer were named as defendants

The suit claimed the church did not provide state licensed physicians for the boxing event and did not have the proper insurance coverage.

Court documents filed Monday indicated a settlement had been reached and Clinkscale's "minor children are entitled to proceeds," therefore a Guardian Ad Litem will be appointed to the children.

Clinkscale was a linebacker for the Golden Hurricane from 2005 to 2009.
