Hillary Clinton has officially been nominated as the Democratic candidate for president. No woman has ever been the nominee for president in either party and until the early 90's, no woman had ever led the city of Tulsa. Susan Savage broke that glass ceiling.
The delegates in Philadelphia made history. Hillary Clinton is the first woman nominated to run for the most powerful position on earth.
"Most other major countries around the world have had women leaders so it's long overdue," Morton Comprehensive Health Services CEO and former Mayor Susan Savage said.
Susan Savage made history in Tulsa. In 1992, she was the first woman elected as the city's Mayor.
"I was asked early on what it's like to be a woman Mayor and I answered that by saying, 'The woman part of that I know and that hasn't changed, the operative part in that question is Mayor,'" she said.
Mayor of Tulsa is quite a bit different than president of the United States, but Savage says some of the roadblocks are similar.
"There is no question women lead in everything," she said. "They lead in corporations, in cities and in states."
Savage served ten years in the Mayor's office, which is longer than any president is allowed.
"My granddaughter and my grandson, this is an opportunity for them," Savage said. "I hope they grow up and never have to ask, 'Can a woman be president of the Untied States? I hope they see it in action.'"
The now Morton Comprehensive Health Services CEO hopes Hillary will be able to have at least four years in the oval office.
Hillary Clinton isn't the only one making history. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, could be the first male spouse of the President of the United States.
