Elderly man shot and killed inside Creek County home

CREEK COUNTY, Okla. - Creek County sheriff's deputies are investigating a homicide near Drumright.

Family of the victim says Roy Varnell Sr. was shot and killed inside his home near Highway 33 and 449th West Avenue Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, the elderly victim was with his grandchildren, a 12-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl, when a suspect broke into the home and shot and killed him.

The children were not harmed.

There were no signs of a forced entry but deputies said it's possible the doors were unlocked.

The children were not able to provide authorities with a suspect description.

"It's real difficult when you don't have a description, when you don't have a race, you don't have a gender, you don't have a clothing description," said Sgt. Matthew Greco-Lucchina, with the Creek County Sheriff's Office.  "All you're going to have is two kids who were probably very scared and terrified at the time."

The house is located within a mile from where wildfires struck just days before. Deputies say at this time there appears to be no connection.

"There could be looters out here, that's possible. We just don't know at this time," said Greco-Lucchina.

The shooting forced nearby Olive Schools into a temporary lockdown.

Meanwhile, deputies urged area residents to take precautions.

"If you think someone is prowling around, just call us up and we'll come out. Just don't take any chances," said Greco-Lucchina.

Deputies said guns belonging to the homeowner were recovered from the residence,= but they are not sure if those guns were used in the crime.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
