A drug company CEO changes his mind.
Martin Shkreli of Turing Pharmaceuticals announced he will lower the cost of a life-saving drug, after he raised the price more than five-thousand percent.
The drug is called Daraprim. It's used to treat a rare infection called toxoplasmosis.
It's also used for cancer and AIDs patients with weak immune systems.
To learn more about this drug, 2News spoke with an AIDs specialist at OSUs Ryan White Clinic.
A doctor with the clinic says a very low percentage of patients are prescribed this drug and many that are get help from federal funds.
“Most of the patients that we see, probably 80% of our population, is on a program where we assist them with medications through the Ryan White grant,“ Madhuri Lad, D.O. said.
A sigh of relief for some patients. The price of Daraprim initially went from $13.50 cents to $750 a pill.
The drug company's CEO says they will lower the price, so they will break even or make a small profit.
The new price has not been announced.
